“Precious” Star Gabourey Sidibe Tempting Target For Weight Loss Marketers

It looks like marketers for weight loss products may have actress Gabourey Sidibe in their sites, reports Mike Howard on Diet Blog:

The first (or at least the most publicized) of the circling vultures is acaisupply.com, who claimed in a letter that they were worried about her health, and that she ought to consider weight loss for that reason alone, not her image.

Vultures? Well, Mike certainly doesn’t beat around the bush.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with attempting to publicize a product through celebrity endorsements. If it is a reputable, effective product and the celebrity benefits, then everyone wins.

Unfortunately acai berry products have never been proven to be effective for weight loss. And there is no reason they would be. Mike agrees with that point.

Getting Sidibe to pop pills for a year won’t do jack squat in helping her shed pounds.

Acai-related products are of the most overhyped on the planet.

Acai berries have antioxidants, as many fruits do, but it really stops there. Antioxidants are not appetite suppressants, and they haven’t been shown to be effective for weight loss.

In fact, contrary to popular belief, too much fruit and fruit juice is not good when you are trying to lose weight. Fruit is nearly 100% sugar with a few vitamins. That’s not going to help you trim down.

We should be celebrating Sidibe’s talent, not her size. Her weight does not take away from her acting ability. That said, Sidibe reportedly weighs in excess of 350lbs, and at that weight, she is not likely to be very healthy.

There are two extremes regarding weight loss. One side says that you should be able to accept yourself at any weight. The other side glorifies the rail-thin models and actresses.

So where is the sensible compromise? It’s just this. You have a right to feel good about yourself whatever your body size.

But still, a reasonable exercise program with proper nutrition will lead to a healthy body and improve your overall happiness. And there is certainly nothing wrong with that.
