The Huffington Post has an item about actor John Goodman:
John Goodman looked great on Letterman Wednesday night, and Dave brought up his obvious weight loss, saying, “You look wonderful!”
It’s nice when someone gives you a compliment. We all like to hear when we look nice or have done something well, and actors and celebrities are no different than anyone else in that regard.
I’d get off of ‘Roseanne’ every spring. I’d lose 60 lbs every spring. Then I got too fond of the barley corn… I’d gain it back and then some, every year.”
By barley corn he means drinking too much alcohol. It’s not just the calories in alcohol that are the problem, although at 7 calories per gram alcohol has nearly as many calories per gram as does fat.
No, it’s the effect of alcohol on the liver and the metabolism. Alcohol diverts the resources of the liver away from processing fat and toward detoxification. The result is a sluggish metabolism and fat storage.
Goodman — a very fine actor — has had a lot of his fans worried about his weight. One comment summed up what a lot of people have been feeling:
Wow, good for him! I used to think he would die like John Candy, and that would have been very sad.
We’ve seen too many of the people that we care about die too early. The list is fairly long, whether from drinking or drugs or overeating. But as Goodman shows, even if you’ve let yourself go, you can still turn it around.
So, how did he manage to take off the weight?
…getting a lot of exercise, I feel great.. It’s going to be an ongoing process for the rest of my life.
Good for John Goodman. Let’s hope he stays healthy and productive for many more years.
